West Georgia

Advanced Manufacturing Work Ready Region

Georgia's Work Ready Regions is an industry cluster strategy. Each region is an industry-led effort headed by an industry leader and guided by the region's existing industry network. The result is a linking of education, workforce development and training aligned to the needs of the regional advanced manufacturing industry. Its advanced manufacturing industry network is known as the West Georgia Advanced Manufacturing Partnership.

The West Georgia Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, to date, includes Coweta, Heard, Meriwether, Talbot, Troup and Upson Counties. Upson, Meriwether, Talbot and Troup Counties have earned Certified Work Ready Community status, and the remaining counties in the region are currently working toward the designation.

The region is home to a Kia assembly plant, the company's training center and many automotive suppliers. It has a skilled workforce that is ready and eager to fill growing advanced manufacturing jobs. Click here for more detail about the region's workforce.

Vision:

The vision for the West Georgia Advanced Manufacturing Partnership is to be an internationally recognized region for advanced manufacturing, utilizing and attracting a highly skilled workforce in a technologically superior manufacturing environment.

Differentiating the West Georgia Advanced ManufacturingPartnership:

  • Presence of a major manufacturing business that use computer-oriented processes to order, manufacture, assemble and ship their products
  • A majority of the workforce has the ability to operate production systems that involve no manual touching of the product
  • Provide specialized training programs that provide a talent pool for advanced manufacturing companies. These training programs are provided to allow:
    • Young and inexperienced persons to go into the manufacturing environment after a dual-enrollment in high school, followed by a certificate program offered by the technical colleges
    • Experienced workers to change careers to the advanced manufacturing environment
    • A manufacturing environment capable of adjusting to the technology changes without creating large skills gaps or loss of productivity

Goals:

  • Retaining and expanding existing businesses and attracting new businesses to the region
  • Providing a seamless education and workforce training system supporting the industry
  • Creating an environment that fosters fast growth and rapidly changing manufacturing production or process technology
  • Creating many high-wage jobs that provide high value to targeted employees
