South Georgia

Bioscience Work Ready Region

BTCSG Strategy Paper

Georgia's Work Ready Regions is an industry cluster strategy. Each region is an industry-led effort headed by an industry leader and guided by the regions existing industry network. The result is a linking of education, workforce development and training aligned to the needs of the regional bioscience industry. Its bioscience industry network is known as the Bioscience Technology Circle of South Georgia.

The Bioscience Technology Circle of South Georgia, to date, includes Berrien, Brooks, Colquitt, Cook, Echols, Lanier, Lowndes, Tift and Worth Counties. Brooks, Cook, Echols, Lanier and Lowndes Counties have earned Certified Work Ready Community status and the remaining four counties are working toward the designation.

The region boasts a strong research focus through the University of Georgia-Tifton and through the USDA's Agricultural Research Service Tifton facility. It also leads the way in producing high quality and competitive forest and other agricultural products, as well as bio-science products, for international sale and distribution. The Bioscience Technology Circle of South Georgia possesses a strong distribution infrastructure, with major highways and rail lines that connect the region to other parts of the state and country. A highly trained workforce capable of supporting agricultural production and distribution is ready to support these industries. Click here for more detail about the region's workforce.

Vision:

The region will be an expanding hub of agricultural-related bioscience activities that will grow due to the talented and trained workers that emerge from close partnerships between educational institutions and key regional businesses.

Differentiating the Bioscience Technology Circle of South Georgia:

  • A leading region for forestry and wood-product production
  • More than 100 research scientists at the University of Georgia-Tifton focus on agribusiness and agricultural-related bioscience
  • USDA Agricultural Research Service located in Tifton

Goals:

  • A trained workforce that can continuously meet the needs of bioscience businesses
  • An established industry network that actively supports efforts to develop a workforce for the biosciences
  • Career pathways are used to guide those seeking to work in key occupations of the bioscience industry
  • Agricultural-related bioscience companies use Work Ready job profiles, assessments and certifications in company promotion and hiring decisions
  • All counties become Certified Work Ready Communities and meet the required high school graduate rates
